Gratitude Watch – 2008-12-24

by Daniel Brenton on December 24, 2008

Start:Welcome to Gratitude Watch.

Gratitude Watch is an eye on the internet for news, articles, videos, and other items, all focusing on the subject of gratitude.

For more on my intent on these postings, see About Gratitude Watch.

A little note. Times like these force us to turn to inner resources that we may not have realized we had, and when we do, we come out the other side better than when we went in.

It does seem like we’ve been dragged into the process of growing some more (and I’m sure some of us are thinking hey, I’ve grown enough, thank you!) but if we choose to hold on with a little faith in ourselves, and whatever we picture as our higher power, we’ll overcome the challenges that face us.

This holiday season, then, I’d like to wish you and yours all the best you can imagine.

Daniel

So, let’s rock!

•  This is The New Stuff  •

“Darren LaCroix says a personal Thank you!” A little personal bias in this one … Darren is a fellow Las Vegan, the 2001 winner of the Toastmaster International Speech contest — “The World Champion of Public Speaking” for that year — and coaches both professional and non-professional speakers on the art of being an effective speaker. I’ve met him a few times, bought some of his materials, and I can definitely relate to the story he tells of why he is especially thankful this season. I’ve been there, too.

(If you need coaching for public speaking, he’s Da Man.)

ShriNagesh at Smart Advi$e.info gives us “10 Strategies to Create a Joyful Christmas,” the tenth of which is a focus on … you guessed it … gratitude.

Hoosier northpointcc at Northpoint Notes gives us a very thoughtful post on those moments when we wonder “is Gratitude Enough?”

Paul O’Brien at Tarot Blogs offers “Gratitude overcomes “Arctic Blast 2008,” in which he offers absolutely nothing to do with Tarot and a few thoughts about being able to winter through the extreme weather in Portland.

Some welcome straight talk: Lois at Premiere Advice gives us “Gratitude and Tolerance,” an acknowledgment that that life looks pretty grim at the moment, but an call to action as far as gratitude is concerned to just get on with it.

I ran across this surprisingly candid piece that reads to me like a precautionary message for us in America for what a nation without gratitude can become. I do not know the entire situation in Nigeria, but I offer these strong words as the opinion of one man whom I have never met.

Submitted for your perusal: Idang Alibi’s piece at Nigerian Village Square: “El-Rufai: How To Serve Nigeria And Win Applause.”

Greg Allen at It’s Time That Time Was Overthrown gives us “Expression of Gratitude,” and makes a pitch for stepping away from living in the future or the past and being grateful for the moment.

Daniela Nardi at A-Musements + A-Mazements (Daniela, you made me really work to find your name) gives us “Grace and Gratitude – Lessons for the Season.” Some poignant reflections on being reminded during the holiday season that someone you love isn’t there any more, but being grateful that the person once was, after all, there for us to remember.

YouTube user sunshinecoast001 (Sunshine Coast Health Center, Canada) gives us “Practicing Positive Change – Geoff Thompson” A little more straight talk about the value of the four principles (tolerance, forgiveness, humility, and … should we say it? … gratitude) as part of the addiction recovery process.

•  Oldies but Goodies  •

Jeremy Dean from PsyBlog gives us “Better Mood from Gratitude: 2 Minute Exercise – Start Now!” a simple gratitude exercise to put yourself in a better mood in as little as two minutes per week.

(Thanks to Globoforce Blog for tipping me off to this one.)

Stay tuned for the next Gratitude Watch.
